Our Approach to Maths
Mathematics at Neasden Primary School follows the mastery approach where pupils have the opportunity to stay together and work through new content as a whole group. In extreme cases, where students have considerable learning difficulties, individual pupils will receive a bespoke curriculum that meets their mathematical needs. High-attaining pupils will have opportunities to take their learning deeper so that they fully understand key number concepts, rather than simply memorise a process.
All pupils benefit from deepening their conceptual understanding of mathematics, regardless of whether they’ve previously struggled or excelled. Pupils are given time to fully understand, explore and apply ideas, rather than accelerate through new topics. This approach enables our pupils to truly grasp a concept, and the challenge comes from investigating it in new, alternative and more complex ways. Objects, pictures, words, numbers and symbols are everywhere. The mastery approach incorporates all of these to help our pupils explore and demonstrate mathematical ideas, enrich their learning experience and deepen understanding. Together, these elements help cement knowledge so pupils truly understand what they’ve learnt.
All pupils, when introduced to a key new concept, will have the opportunity to build competency in this topic by taking this approach. Our pupils are encouraged to physically represent mathematical concepts regardless of their ability. Objects and pictures are used to demonstrate and visualise abstract ideas, alongside numbers and symbols.
Embedded in our approach is targeted intervention where children have opportunities both within lessons and during the afternoon session to return to their work and explore any errors.
