Our Approach to Art and Design
At Neasden Primary, Art and Design will be taught through the following lenses:
These are golden threads that run through the curriculum across the primary phase and pupils progress through these strands from introduction to a deep understanding.
The EYFS curriculum provides the building blocks to allow pupils at the beginning of Year 1 to access this curriculum. Pupils will gain significant knowledge of all aspects of the Art and Design National Curriculum, this knowledge is defined into 2 types – substantive knowledge and disciplinary knowledge. Substantive Technological knowledge for Art and Design, identifies art styles, pieces of art and key artists that have influenced the world of Art.
The whole school will study the same artist – Leonardo da Vinci in the Autumn term to build a depth of knowledge. The styles of new artists will be studied in the Spring term in each year group and influential pieces of art will be studied in the Summer term. The children will have the opportunity to critically study and compare at least two artists each year. The children will learn about their work and draw on elements to develop their own artistic style. Substantive knowledge also details skills and is progressive though the school, identified for each year group with a focus on Art and Design Skills and Practical application. Disciplinary knowledge for Art and Design involves knowing about and appreciating traditional, modern and contemporary art and is woven throughout the Art and Design curriculum.
